2016-2017: Origins and Motivation
Sojourner Mobile Coffee started as an idea when Wisconsin-native Matthew Nichols first tried pour-over coffee in Anaheim, California. Early in the morning a friend prepared Ethiopia Guji for him in a V60. Matthew was pleasantly surprised at this coffee flavor which was much more dynamic than the sludge he was familiar with in his own coffee pot. The flavor was that of some kind of blueberry and tasted like it could be enjoyed either hot or cold. The process of hand grinding and slow preparation fascinated him, so he determined that he would learn it and take this process back to Milwaukee.
After his return, Matthew realized that not only the process of coffee preparation, but also the origin of the bean really made all the difference in the quality of taste. He tried coffees from Vietnam and South and Central America, but none of them compared to that blueberry flavor profile he had tried in California. There was something specific about African coffee that dynamically affected its flavor.

2018-2019: Early Beginnings
Achieving a food peddler certification was the business’s first major accomplishment, along with the development of a mobile coffee cart to serve a flavorful variety of single-origin coffees to Milwaukee residents. The first iteration of the cart was developed using a combination of pallet wood and stainless steel topped with an innovative V60 funnel apparatus for dispensing “chilled pour-overs”. “Uganda love it” and “Kenya dig it” are a few of the phrases used to highlight single-origin coffee from East Africa.
Navigating the winter conditions Southeast Wisconsin can be challenging for a mobile coffee cart on the open streets. Matthew saw this as an opportunity to bring a team of baristas into a ramen shop in the heart of downtown. From May to November 2019, Sojourner Mobile Coffee delivered morning pop-up service from this restaurant, catering to early-rising coffee drinkers on their morning commute. In 2019, he expanded services to Atlanta, Georgia where he moved shortly after getting married.

2020: Branching Out
During the pandemic, Matthew refocused company operations to include roasted coffee. In April 2020, he began small-batch roasting and selling “African Compilation”, coffee boxes featuring combinations of single-origins from countries such as Ethiopia and Burundi. Since then, Matthew has been perfecting his roasting technique (from stovetop to air-popped) and now services retail locations and restaurants in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
2021-present: The Journey Ahead
Sojourner Mobile Coffee is continuing to expand. In addition to providing private event services, supplying roasted coffee beans online and direct to dining establishments, Sojourner Mobile Coffee is now preparing to open a retail storefront in Atlanta soon.
